In 2007, there were numerous people growing food in the backyards in Portland, Oregon. It reminded me of the time when people grew food in their gardens during WWII.
I combined this with imagery from my own childhood growing up in NH with a family who grew food.

At artist lectures I would ask them what their favorite food was. I would then paint their portrait as that food item. The concept of “You Are What You Eat,” inspired these. Artists not created were: Katherine Bradford as Brown Rice, Harrell Fletcher as Winter Squash/Collard Greens and Jeff Koons as Hefeweizen Beer.
Since I was paying my way through college I also worked at numerous restaurants. Some of these works were also influenced by these.
