Saying farewell to 2012 and moving on to 2013

newyearI recently looked back at my goals for 2012. I have been successful with most of them and that feels good. There are a few that are still pestering me. I will whittle away at these goals for the next year. They are challenging because they push me outside of my comfort zone. These two goals are teaching and exersize.

Looking back over the year, it has been mostly influenced by my trailer. At the beginning of the year, I had just realized that water was getting in still and that it was a bigger project than I had first realized. It is mostly completed now though and well worth all of the effort that I had put into it.

Another major goal for me was to build my own website. I did this and am still really proud that I created this myself. www.rebeccashelly.com

One of my goals last year, was to get a teaching job. I realize now that one of the reasons why I did not try harder was because I didn’t want to stay in Portland. If I got a teaching job here then that would be a reason to stay. My goal now is to redesign my packets and submit these to colleges in New England.

I did give a lecture at Washington State University Vancouver though. I also did studio visits with the students there and really enjoyed the experience.

A major highlight of 2012 was to see my sister get married to Paul. They are high school sweethearts and it was great to see them finally “tie the knot.”

I experimented with a new body of work being influenced by Pennsylvania Dutch Hex signs. This work was in a few group shows. It was interesting to experiment with a new design, but I think that I enjoy creating more painterly work. I am currently trying to come up with a new concept for my next body of work.

The end of the year I was able to meet Stuart’s family for the first time in Chico, California. It was great to meet this side of his family and get a better understanding of where he comes from.

2013 will be a year of extreme change for us. We are planning on a major move and we both feel really excited about a new life. We both want to be in a better place professionally and a new setting may offer that for us. One of my goals for the next year will be to create some videos on some of my teaching techniques that I will add to my teaching packets. This will give the schools a quick and visual understanding of how I would teach.

Do you have any goals for the new year?

My big goal for this year is to lose weight. I guess that is something that lots of people say after the holidays.
